Purpose of Review Deprescribing entails the reduction of medication dosage and frequency or swich over to alternative medications, necessitating a comprehensive evaluation of patients. This review aims to highlight the importance of deprescribing in geriatric oncology, as older adults are particularly vulnerable not only due to age-related factors but also because of the administration of highly potent and complex (SACTs) systemic anticancer therapies.
Recent finding Cancer patients are particularly susceptible to complications arising from varied prescription patterns, often resulting in polypharmacy. Therefore, it is imperative to undertake a thorough evaluation and rationalization of supportive care medication prescriptions, alongside chemotherapy and other medications, such as premedication drugs.
Summary Comprehensive assessment of supportive care medications in oncology patients is essential for optimizing patient management and therapeutic outcomes. The potential adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with these medications may result in extended hospitalizations and interactions with systemic anti-cancer therapies. It is crucial for healthcare professionals to remain vigilant in monitoring patients receiving supportive medications to facilitate deprescribing, mitigate drug-related complications, and enhance the quality of life.
