The African Journal of Biomedical Research (AJBR) is a distinguished academic journal that has been at the forefront of scientific publishing in Africa since its inception in 1998. It was initially conceived as a collaborative initiative between Laytal Communications, a private communications firm, and scholars from the academic community, commonly referred to as the Ivory Tower. This foundational collaboration aimed to create a platform for African researchers to publish their work and share knowledge in the biomedical sciences, fostering intellectual exchange both locally and globally.

Over the years, the journal recognized the need to expand its vision and reach, which led to the formation of the Biomedical Communications Group, Ibadan, a collective of dedicated professionals and academics. This group evolved into what is now known as Biomedical Journal Consult, Ibadan, Nigeria, which currently oversees the publication and management of AJBR. This transition marked a new phase in the journal’s journey, strengthening its editorial and organizational framework.

In 2023, AJBR entered into a landmark partnership with A.R.C. Publication Services L.L.C., an internationally recognized publishing organization. This collaboration is part of a broader strategy to elevate the journal’s visibility, accessibility, and operational efficiency. The partnership is expected to be fully realized by 2024, opening up new opportunities for wider indexing, improved digital infrastructure, and increased international contributions.

AJBR serves as a multidisciplinary platform focused primarily on the biomedical sciences, while also embracing allied health sciences and interdisciplinary research that intersects with the physical sciences and the humanities. The journal accepts a diverse range of scholarly works, including:

  • Full-length original research articles

  • Comprehensive review papers

  • Short communications

  • Rapid reports

  • Mini-reviews

  • Updates on scientific conferences, workshops, and related events

The journal is guided by the principles of academic integrity, editorial consistency, and a commitment to publishing high-impact research that addresses both regional and global health challenges. AJBR plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between African scientists and the international research community, offering an inclusive space for emerging and established scholars to disseminate their findings.

AJBR’s mission goes beyond publishing and is about building a sustainable ecosystem for scientific research in Africa, supporting innovation, policy development, and education through high-quality scholarly communication. The journal actively encourages submissions from early-career researchers and promotes ethical research standards, peer review transparency, and editorial fairness.

As the journal looks ahead to the future, its goal remains rooted in empowering knowledge exchange, encouraging scientific dialogue, and promoting solutions that advance public health and biomedical science on the African continent and beyond.
