Purpose of the research: This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the pharmacological effects, mechanisms of action, clinical benefits, and safety profile of Bacopa monnieri, with a particular emphasis on its cognitive-enhancing, neuroprotective, adaptogenic, and cardioprotective properties.
Materials and methods: A narrative literature review methodology was employed. Scientific publications from indexed databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar were analyzed, with a focus on clinical trials, in vivo and in vitro studies on Bacopa monnieri and its active constituents.
Results: The findings demonstrate that Bacopa monnieri exerts cognitive benefits primarily through cholinergic modulation, neurogenesis, antioxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. It has shown promise in clinical trials for enhancing memory, reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms, and protecting against cardiovascular and hepatic injury. The herb also exhibits immunomodulatory and adaptogenic effects, and recent evidence suggests a role in telomere preservation and HPA axis regulation. It is generally well tolerated, although potential interactions with cytochrome P450-metabolized drugs warrant caution.
Conclusion: Bacopa monnieri is a well-researched medicinal herb with multiple mechanisms of action supporting its traditional use in cognitive and general health. Evidence from clinical and preclinical studies confirms its potential as a safe and effective natural agent for enhancing brain function, managing stress-related disorders, and providing systemic protection.
