Abstract

Introduction: Most athletes who train with high intensity may suffer from instability. For young athletes, traumatic anterior instability which encompasses both dislocations and subluxation events is responsible for shoulder instability. Goalkeepers are more prone to shoulder disorders than other field players due to their unique role, and as football is a contact sport football players are suffering from a growing incidence of shoulder injuries.
Aim: This study aimed to discover the prevalence of shoulder subluxation in recreational goalkeepers. A goalkeeper may be at risk of shoulder subluxation due to intense diving, overhead throwing activities, and shot-stopping.
Material and methodology: A survey of 72 recreational goalkeepers both male and female, ranging in age from 10 to 40 years, was conducted. All 72 goalkeepers were assessed using 3 special tests anterior apprehension test, posterior apprehension test, and relocation test. The anterior apprehension test was used to assess the anterior instability of the shoulder and the Jobe relocation test was used to confirm the anterior instability of the shoulder whereas the posterior apprehension test was used to assess the posterior instability of the shoulder.
Result: When tested for anterior apprehension test (4.16%) were positive for anterior instability of the shoulder and the anterior subluxation was confirmed through the Jobe relocation test. When tested for the posterior apprehension test (0.00%) participants were positive.
Conclusion: There is a very low prevalence of shoulder subluxation in recreational goalkeepers (4.16%). These findings suggest that there is minimal risk of anterior shoulder subluxation and no risk of shoulder subluxation in the posterior direction in recreational goalkeepers.
