Background: Good sleep hygiene has a substantial effect on both psychological well-being and quality of sleep. A consistent sleep schedule promotes more peaceful and rejuvenating sleep by regulating the body's internal clock. A regular bedtime and relaxation exercises can help people feel less stressed and anxious, which improves mood swings and general well-being.
Aim: This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of sleep hygiene program as a strategy to improve sleep quality and psychological well-being among undergraduate nursing students.
Methods: A quasi-experimental pre-test post-test control group design was used to assess the effectiveness of sleep hygiene program on sleep quality and psychological well-being in undergraduate nursing students. A total of 120 eligible participants were enrolled in the study from two nursing colleges of district Solan, Himachal Pradesh. 60 subjects were randomly assigned to experimental group, where, twelve sessions were given for thirty minutes to one-hour daily of sleep hygiene program and 60 subjects were randomly assigned to control group. Two validated instruments: Pittsburgh sleep quality index and Ryff’s psychological well-being scale were used. Quality of sleep and psychological well-being in experimental and control group were measured at the first day of interaction (pre-test) and at the end i.e post- test on 22nd day after intervention.
Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the mean scores of sleep quality and psychological well-being post-intervention compared with pre-intervention in experimental group (p=0.001) and (p=0.013) respectively. The sleep hygiene program was found to be effective in improving the quality of sleep (p=0.005) and psychological well-being (p=0.047) between experimental and control group.
Conclusion: Sleep hygiene program can help in improving quality of sleep and promoting psychological well-being among nursing students. Nurse educators may sensitize and educate regarding importance of sleep hygiene practices to nursing personnel and students.
