The Indian elephant is a keystone species and the national heritage animal of the country. This majestic species is a vital part of the wildlife habitats and ecosystem in significant ways. They ensure ecological balance and resulting ecosystem service for human-wellbeing. The shrinking of habitats and loss of ancient migratory route of elephant corridors, pose the greater risk for both human and elephant. The Chandaka- Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha is a prime example of shrinking natural habitat surrounded by a concrete jungle. The rapid growth of urbanisation swallowed the sanctuary, and the wilderness turned into a small piece of island. This paper seeks to analyse, the crucial intersection of corridor management and human-elephant conflict in the State of Odisha, India. It also examines, whether the current legal tools are being insufficiently used to protect and conserve wildlife corridors. This study attempts to contribute to a better understanding of the legal framework along with the State’s policy framework for managing and combating human-elephant conflict.
