Abstract

This study explores the traditional Meitei ritual of Lamta Thangja Saroi Khangba, analyzing its historical, cultural, and social dimensions. Using an ethnographic approach, it documents the roles of maibas and maibis, ritual practices, symbolic offerings, and chants associated with the ritual. Through firsthand observations and interviews with ritual specialists and community elders, the research provides a comprehensive account of the ritual’s significance within Meitei society. Additionally, the study investigates the evolving interpretations of Saroi Khangba in contemporary contexts, particularly in addressing modern challenges such as cultural identity crises, environmental degradation, and psychological well-being. The findings indicate that Saroi Khangba functions as more than a religious observance; it is a vital mechanism for cultural preservation, community cohesion, and spiritual renewal. By examining case studies across various villages in Manipur, this research highlights variations in practice and their implications for socio-cultural continuity. The involvement of key institutions such as the Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board (LSTB) and the Uttra Shanglen of the Sana Konung (Royal Palace) ensures the authenticity and continuity of the ritual at both institutional and community levels. The preparation of symbolic offerings and ritualistic tools further reinforces the Meitei belief in harmonizing the spiritual and material worlds. The study also emphasises the psychological and communal benefits of the ritual, emphasizing its role in alleviating stress, reinforcing group solidarity, and sustaining indigenous knowledge systems. However, urbanization, migration, and shifting generational priorities pose challenges to its continued observance. The research suggests that adaptations in urban settings and the integration of Saroi Khangba into cultural tourism and educational programs could help ensure its survival. Ultimately, this study contributes to the broader discourse on indigenous rituals and their resilience in modern contexts. By shedding light on the enduring relevance of Saroi Khangba, it advocates for the recognition and preservation of Meitei cultural heritage as an integral part of sustainable community development and identity formation.
