Abstract

Marma or Varmam are the terms that encompass an entire life science, firmly rooted in millenniums of wisdom passed on from the Indian Sages and Siddhars. Marmachikitsa in itself is a treatment modality that finds its origins along the very existence of the human civilisation. Not only has this science developed and prospered through the ages, it has also given wings to its other contemporaries in the likes of medicine, yoga, self-defence, astrology, martial arts, logic and numerous others. Bringing together the prime crux of Vedanta and the knowledge of life that has evolved with the human race, Marmachikitsa serves to bridge the gap between the physical and the subtle dimensions, there by giving its practitioners, the power to harness the life force (Prana), maintain its equilibrium and thus ensure a healthy state of being.

The knowledge of Marma or Varmam, safely guarded as it has been through the centuries, has it is origins in the very need of the humans to develop a life science that could be the closest to natural equilibrium of the body, and at the same time adhered to the need of the common people. Thus it came into a manifest realisation, the path which could protect like a mother, defend like a companion and act swift in terms with time.In this classical review of literature a moddest attempt is made to gather various ancient healing technique of Marma or varmam and historical and mythological origins, detail of schools of  marma science which might to re-explore the Ayurveda in new -realms.
