Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is referred to a series of metabolic disorders with characteristic features such as an elevated blood glucose level, along with altered fat metabolism, which results from impaired insulin secretion or insulin sensitivity or both. Elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is a well-established risk factor and an important biomarker for both type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin exerted a beneficial effect on triglycerides metabolism by improving intrahepatic glucose metabolism and reducing extrahepatic insulin resistance. ChREBP a critical glucose-sensing transcription factor, functions as one of the key regulators in metformin-mediated modulation of glucose and triglyceride metabolism. The present study was observed metformin effect on lipid profile.

Materials and Methods: 300 patients were included for study. We monitored the subjects, kept on metformin(1000mg/daily).  We have recorded the parameters on 45th day and 90th day of treatment. Parameters includes FBS, TC, TGs, HDL-C, LDL-C and VLDL –C. The ANOVA performed with posthoc t –test. The values expressed with mean and SD.

Results: In results observed that decrease in fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, LDL- C and TGs. HDL-C levels were increased significantly after treatment. The fasting blood samples were collected 0 day of treatment, 45th day of treatment and 90th day of treatment. The results were clearly indicated there was significance difference after treatment with metformin, the results showed corrected dyslipidaemia after 45 days and after 90 days it has come to almost near to normal.

Conclusion: The results of our study indicated that metformin having positive effect in correcting dyslipidaemia. The present study concluded that metformin having the ability to correct dyslipidaemia in type II diabetic patients.
