Abstract

Abstract

In light of the recent rise in global conflicts and displacement, there is a growing need for effective psychosocial interventions in peacebuilding efforts. This study explored the role of Psychologists at the centre stage of peacebuilding and the various interventions employed during the COVID-19 pandemic that ravaged several countries in the world. The main aim of the study was to explore whether they were allowed to intervene, from individual therapy to community-based programs, to assess the impact of the intervention with a focus on promoting healing, resilience, and social cohesion. The study used semi-structured interviews to assess the roles of psychologists in Lagos State, Nigeria, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. 10 licensed psychologists participated in the study; their responses were analysed using thematic analysis. The common themes that emerged revealed that the government is yet to acknowledge the importance of psychosocial peacebuilding at the centre stage of crisis management in Nigeria. It also showed that people have low trust in the services provided by psychologists because it has not gained the necessary popularity. By highlighting the key elements of successful psychosocial peacebuilding, the study offers practical recommendations to place human (psychological) resources at the centre of peacebuilding initiatives and to inform policymakers on the need to equip manpower to support and strengthen conflict-affected populations. Overall, this study highlights the importance of placing humans at the centre of peacebuilding efforts and the potential impact they can have in promoting lasting peace and stability in society.
