Soil is an earthly resource that provides the podium for supporting life systems required for plant growth and development; from providing structural suitability to water holding capacity of the soil; enable root penetration capability and soil pH maintenance. As it interfaces with lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere, with a handful of lives, it performs multiple functions that support plant growth and development with regards to anchorage, nutrient and water supply.
Soil plays an important role in crop production as it provides anchorage for the plant and also makes available the necessary nutrients and water. The appropriate knowledge and adaptation of the diverse applications of soil to crop production will enhance sustainable crop production and contribute to tackling worldwide food insecurity.
This paper would explore how the different components of soil, including mineral particles, organic matter, water, and air, influence the growth and yield of crops, highlighting the critical role of factors like soil texture, structure, nutrient availability, and pH level in determining crop suitability and productivity.
