Abstract

Introduction: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a parasitic infection caused by the larval stage of the Taenia solium tapeworm. Common in developing nations, especially rural areas, NCC raises concerns due to factors like poverty, specific climates, and poor sanitation practices that aid the transmission of this CNS tapeworm.

Aims & Objectives: The study objectives include investigating the clinical profile of pediatric patients with ring-enhancing brain lesions and evaluating IgG ELISA for NCC in this population.

Methods: An observational cross-sectional study involved subjects aged 1 to 18 years. A minimum of 42 patients were included, determined by a calculated sample size. Neuroimaging findings, and Serum IgG levels for NCC ELISA were analyzed.

Results: Out of 42 subjects, Neuroimaging diagnoses revealed 71.4% with NCC, 26.19% with tuberculoma, and 2.38% with brain abscess. ELISA test in the study had a sensitivity and specificity of 77.78% and 66.67% respectively.

Conclusion: This research provides valuable insights into the clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with ring-enhancing brain lesions and highlights the potential of IgG ELISA for NCC diagnosis, contributing to improved understanding and management of the disease especially in resource limited settings and developing countries like India.

Implications and Future Directions: The study suggests the importance of considering neuroimaging in pediatric patients with ring-enhancing lesions. The significant correlation between Serum IgG levels and NCC in neuroimaging emphasizes the potential of IgG ELISA in diagnosing NCC.
