Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition leading to enzymatic auto digestion and the destruction of pancreatic tissue. Its presentation ranges widely from mild, self-limited disease to sepsis and multi organ failure (1)
Delays in the identification of early organ dysfunction are associated with a higher risk of morbidity and mortality (2).Identifying patients with severe disease at earlier stages would facilitate appropriate intervention, goal directed treatment and reduce associated morbidity and mortality. A number of scoring systems have been created and revised with the aim to stratify the severity of Acute Pancreatitis. Most commonly used ones include the Ranson's score, Bedside index of severity in Acute Pancreatitis ( BISAP) , Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE II)- (has 15 variables designed for use in the intensive care unit (ICU) to predict mortality)and CT Severity Index (CTSI)(based on CT imaging)3.The practicality and usefulness of these tools in ED management are limited by their complexity and reliance on post-admission data.(1)
