Abstract

During the early colonial period, India experienced political instability due to the decline of the Mughal Empire, as regional powers like the Marathas, Nawabs, and Rajputs sought to consolidate authority, often through conflicts that deepened fragmentation. The British East India Company exploited this situation, intervening in local politics under the guise of protecting commercial interests. Through alliances with rulers and victories in key battles such as Plassey (1757) and Buxar (1764), the British gained control over Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha, gradually consolidating power. Their “Divide and Rule” policy leveraged existing rivalries to strengthen colonial authority. Traditional administrative structures were weakened as local kings and zamindars became dependent on the British for revenue and governance, while the economy suffered. Over time, this dominance sparked widespread resistance across social classes and regions, laying the foundation for a sustained struggle for independence and fostering national consciousness and unity among the Indian people. The contribution of various regions and communities to India’s freedom movement has been particularly noteworthy. The Peth region, located near Nashik in Maharashtra, also played a significant role in this struggle. In response to the oppression, exploitation, and repressive policies of the British administration, the people of Peth organized themselves and mounted a resistance that added momentum to the national movement.
