Female sugarcane cutters, particularly in rural regions like Beed district, Maharashtra, face a range of medical challenges due to the physically demanding nature of their work, exposure to environmental hazards, and limited access to healthcare. The physically strenuous tasks of cutting and harvesting sugarcane lead to common musculoskeletal disorders such as chronic back pain, joint issues. Additionally, exposure to pesticides, smoke from burning fields and dust contributes to respiratory problems like Breathlessness. Prolonged sun exposure and inadequate protective measures result in skin conditions such as burns, rashes, Sun stroke. Female workers also experience reproductive health challenges, including pelvic infection, urinary tract infection, cyst on uterus , severe abdominal pain during menstrual periods, hysterectomy etc. Mental health concerns, including stress, anxiety, and depression, are prevalent due to financial insecurity, harsh working conditions and social isolation. Furthermore, issues like dehydration, fatigue, infections, and limited access to medical care exacerbate the health risks faced by these workers. This paper highlights the various medical challenges faced by female sugarcane cutters and calls for targeted interventions to improve their health and working conditions, including better access to healthcare, protective measures and socio-economic support. Addressing these challenges is crucial for the overall well-being of female laborers and for enhancing their quality of life in the sugarcane industry.
