Introduction: Anthropometric and psychological variables play a crucial role in determining the performance of kalaripayattu players, particularly when comparing junior and senior athletes.
Objective: The purpose of the study was to compare the anthropometric and psychological characteristics of junior and senior female kalaripayattu players in Kerala.
Method: For the study, 100 participants, comprising 50 juniors aged 14–18 years and 50 seniors aged 18–24 years, were selected. Psychological variables such as anxiety, self-esteem, and motivation, as well as anthropometric measures like height, weight, body mass index (BMI), and limb length, were measured using standardised tests. Descriptive statistics and an independent samples t-test were applied to determine the differences between junior and senior female kalaripayattu players.
Result: The study indicated significant differences in height, weight, leg length, and arm length between junior and senior female kalaripayattu players. No significant differences were found in worry and somatic trait anxiety scores, self-esteem, or any dimensions of motivation, except that juniors exhibited significantly higher concentration disruption scores compared to seniors.
Conclusion: These results show the importance of age-appropriate programs, including both anthropometric and psychological needs, enabling players to achieve targeted potential in kalaripayattu.
