Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, presents with relapsing-remitting mucosal inflammation of the colon, often associated with abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. While conventional therapies focus on immunosuppression and symptomatic relief, they frequently fall short in addressing the root causes, emotional triggers, and constitutional predispositions. This has prompted growing interest in integrative models of care that emphasize personalized and holistic interventions.
Objective: This narrative review explores a synergistic model that integrates Ayurvedic dietary principles, lifestyle regulation, and medical astrology (Ayur-Jyotish) to provide a comprehensive, individualized approach to the prevention and management of ulcerative colitis.
Methods: A qualitative review of classical Ayurvedic texts, Vedic astrology treatises (e.g., Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra), and contemporary scientific literature was conducted. Concepts were mapped across Ayurveda (dosha theory, agni, ama), planetary health correlations, and modern understandings of gut inflammation, circadian biology, and psycho-neuro-immunology.
Results: UC is predominantly a Pitta-dominant disorder associated with impaired digestion (mandagni), toxin accumulation (ama), and mental-emotional stress. A modified Pitta-pacifying diet, seasonal routines (ritucharya), and lifestyle practices such as yoga, pranayama, and meditation support gut-brain balance and reduce inflammatory triggers. Medical astrology enhances personalization by identifying planetary vulnerabilities (e.g., afflicted Moon, Mars, 6th/8th houses) and guiding remedial measures (e.g., mantras, fasting, gemstone therapy) aligned with karmic and constitutional tendencies.
Conclusion: A synergistic model combining Ayurveda, lifestyle modification, and medical astrology offers a promising and holistic paradigm for the management of ulcerative colitis. By addressing physical, emotional, and cosmic dimensions, this approach promotes not only symptomatic relief but also long-term balance (swasthya). Future clinical studies are needed to validate its efficacy and establish protocols for integrative practice in chronic inflammatory diseases.
