Baseline Characteristics of Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease – A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Background: Chronic renal disease is a condition where the kidneys are damaged and cannot filter blood effectively, lead to a gradual loss of kidney function over months or years. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.

Aim: To study the baseline characteristics in people with chronic kidney disease in a  multi speciality hospital, South India

Materials and methods:  The study was conducted at Multi Speciality hospital for a period of 6 months between July 2023 to January 2024. Ethical approval was obtained (IEC/AMSH/2023/20). Data was collected from the patients who gave their consent and visiting Nephrology department for consultation. All the patients were categorised into two groups such as with dialysis and without dialysis respectively. All the relevant data was collected from the patient case sheet such as socio demographics, co morbidities, etc. Data was analysed using Microsoft excel and Graphpad prism

Results: Total of 762 patients was enrolled. Males are more 259 (56.18%) dialysis group while in without dialysis group females are more 189(62.79%). People within the age of 50-60years are highest among dialysis group. Patients on dialysis had a history of alcohol consumption; around 233(50.54%). Most (75%) of the patients has a history of smoking. Majority of the patients in the with dialysis group were literate 416(90.4%). Patients undergoing dialysis had business as main occupation 26.03%.

Majority of the patients had no positive history of CKD. Majority of the patients along with dialysis group have both DM and HTN as co morbidities 155(33.84%) followed by HTN 114(24.73%). Most (85.03%) of the patients were in stage V. Majority (33.84%) of the patients had a history other co morbidities especially both diabetes and hypertension since 5-10 years.
