Abstract

Background: Lipid profile depends on renal function and proteinuria since hyperlipidemia is a common consequence of CKD and lipoprotein metabolism change and is linked to GFR reduction. Patients without nephrotic syndrome and non-dialysis-dependent CKD have low HDL, high triglycerides, normal or low TC and LDL cholesterol, but a higher atherogenic profile is disguised.

Objectives: To determine the frequency of hyperlipidemia in chronic kidney disease patients

Study Design and Setting: Descriptive, Cross sectional study was conducted at Department of Medicine, Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad.

Methodology: A total of 176 patients of CKD, 30 to 70 years of age of both genders were included. Patients with lipid lowering drugs, acute or chronic infection and taking diuretics were excluded. 5 ml of venous blood was drawn from the antecubital vein from all the subjects following an overnight fast of 8-12 hours after proper aseptic precautions, into sterile and disposable plastic syringes. After removing the needle, the blood was left in the syringe, covered with foil and transported in a cool vaccine box to the laboratory within 3 hours. Data was collected for hyperlipidemia from both groups by researcher herself and noted.

Results: Age range in this study was from 30 to 70 years with mean age of 44.88 ± 10.68 years. Majority of the patients 122 (69.32%) were between 30 to 50 years of age. Out of 176 patients, 95 (53.98%) were male and 81 (46.01%) were females with male to female ratio 1.2:1. In our study, frequency of hypercholesterolemia was found in 76 (43.18%) and hypertriglyceridemia in 66 (37.50%) in chronic kidney disease patients.

Conclusion: This study concluded that frequency of hypercholesterolemia was 43.18% and hypertriglyceridemia was 37.50% in chronic kidney disease patients
