Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy pose significant risks to maternal and fetal health, necessitating effective management strategies. Oral labetalol and nifedipine are commonly used medications for controlling hypertension in post-pregnancy women with hypertensive disorders.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted to compare the effectiveness of oral labetalol versus oral nifedipine in controlling hypertension in post-pregnancy women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Relevant studies published were identified through electronic databases. Studies comparing the efficacy and safety of oral labetalol and nifedipine were included. Data regarding blood pressure control, adverse effects, and other relevant outcomes were extracted and synthesized.
Results: A total of 9 studies were included in the systematic review. The findings revealed comparable efficacy between oral labetalol and nifedipine in controlling hypertension in post-pregnancy women with hypertensive disorders. Both medications demonstrated effectiveness in lowering blood pressure, with minimal differences in adverse effects. However, variations in the time to achieve blood pressure control and other secondary outcomes were observed across studies.
Conclusion: Oral labetalol and nifedipine are both effective options for controlling hypertension in post-pregnancy women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. While both medications demonstrate comparable efficacy, individual patient characteristics and preferences should be considered when selecting the most appropriate treatment. Further research, including well-designed randomized controlled trials, is needed to provide more definitive conclusions and optimize treatment guidelines for this patient population.
