Background:
Thyroid disorders are prevalent endocrine conditions that significantly impact overall health. Conventional treatment methods primarily involve hormone replacement therapy and antithyroid drugs. Homeopathy, as a complementary and alternative medicine, has been explored for its potential benefits in managing thyroid disorders.
Objective:
This narrative review aims to evaluate the scope of homeopathy in thyroid disorders by analyzing existing literature from Google Scholar and PubMed.
Methods:
A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted on Google Scholar and PubMed databases using keywords such as "thyroid disorders," "homeopathy or homoeopathy," "hypothyroidism," and "hyperthyroidism." Relevant studies, clinical trials, and reviews were included to assess the efficacy, safety, and limitations of homeopathic interventions. Articles with English language were preferred for data collection followed with elimination of duplicates records.
Results:
Overall 28 research papers were screened and the narrative review was expanded with outcomes highlighted with study population\study design and treatment effects. Homeopathy shows potential in symptom management and addressing underlying constitutional factors in thyroid disorders. Preliminary evidence suggests benefits in specific conditions such as hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroiditis. However, the findings are limited by small sample sizes, lack of robust methodologies, and minimal large-scale randomized controlled trials.
Conclusion:
While homeopathy may offer complementary benefits for thyroid disorders, more rigorous clinical studies are necessary to establish its efficacy and safety. Integrative approaches combining conventional and homeopathic therapies may enhance patient outcomes. Further research should focus on addressing methodological limitations and exploring individualized treatment responses.
