Abstract
Background: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is any type of bedwetting occurring in children over 5 years of age, at night, when they are asleep. Most children gradually stop wetting the bed on their own, as they grow older. This usually happens between 3 and 5 years of age. Frequent bed-wetting is often upsetting to both parents and children. Although bedwetting is not a serious condition, it can cause stress for child and family.
Objectives: To find out the attitude and the awareness of parents regarding Nocturnal Enuresis.
Methodology: A descriptive survey was conducted among the parents of rural area. Data was collected from 226 parents with the use of structured questionnaire. Part I of the tool consists of questions related to demographic data consists of 05 items (Age, Gender, Birth order, problem of bed-wetting, Night sleeping pattern, Behavioral problems and Academic performance). Part II consisted of modified questionnaire related to awareness regarding Nocturnal enuresis among children, each item has three options Yes, No and Don’t know. Part III consisted of modified Attitude Scale regarding Nocturnal Enuresis among children.
Result: The prevalence of Nocturnal Enuresis was 09.90%% in which 06.31% were males and 03.59% females. 131 (58%) parents ware aware about Nocturnal Enuresis and 128 (56%) parents found to be considering Nocturnal Enuresis as Abnormal, where as 61% parents expected their child to be dry up to the age of 5 years.
Conclusion: The prevalence rate was higher in the rural area of Maharashtra. Most of the parents consider Nocturnal Enuresis as social stigma. Awareness of parents and positive attitude found to be improving the general health of children in rural area.
