Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) plays a pivotal role in empowering individuals with complex communication needs, especially in rural and remote settings where access to traditional speech therapy and resources is often limited. This article reviews the challenges and solutions associated with the implementation of AAC systems in rural and remote settings in India. Key barriers include economic constraints, limited awareness, infrastructural deficiencies, cultural stigma, and linguistic diversity. Despite these challenges, there is significant potential for AAC systems to improve communication access, inclusion, and quality of life for individuals with disabilities in rural India. The article explores global best practices, such as the use of mobile-based applications and community-driven outreach programs, offering valuable lessons for India’s context. It highlights the need for affordable, culturally relevant, and technologically appropriate AAC solutions, supported by policy initiatives and cross-sector collaboration. Drawing on case studies, this review emphasizes the importance of grassroots involvement, awareness-building, and leveraging existing government and NGO frameworks. The paper concludes by recommending strategies to scale AAC access, advocating for the integration of AAC into educational and healthcare systems, and underscoring the potential for AAC to promote social inclusion in rural India.
