Abstract

Background: Rhinosinusitis is nothing but the inflammation of the nose and the paranasal sinuses. About 134 million Indians suffer from Chronic Rhino sinusitis. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy and computed tomography play an important role in diagnosing patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. Both these techniques had certain advantages and disadvantages. So, this study was planned to assess and compare the anatomy of the osseocartilaginous framework of the nasal and paranasal sinuses using computed tomography and intraoperative diagnostic nasal endoscopy.

Methods:

This prospective observational study was conducted in the ENT department of Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Ariyur, Puducherry. The study lasted eight months, from September 2023 to April 2024. After the initial assessment, all the patients were subjected to a pre-operative CT scan, and the findings were compared to the intraoperative DNE.

Results:

A total of 60 patients participated in the study. The DNE's sensitivity was 94.3% with a specificity of 85.7%, and it had a positive and negative predictive value of 90.8% and 90.9%. Most of the patients who were found to be positive on the endoscopy were also positive on the CT. The sensitivity of the CT was found to be high for all the groups of the sinus disease, whereas the specificity was high for the posterior group of the sinuses.

Conclusion

The computed tomography findings correlated well with the intraoperative findings. The CT scans, and DNEs are complementary diagnostic tools for diagnosing and managing patients with chronic rhino-sinusitis
