Abstract
Aim: To study the incidence of Sarcoidosis in Jammu region.
Background: Sarcoidosis is underdiagnosed in Indian subcontinent due to its close resemblance to tuberculosis. Sarcoidosis is a disease of unknown etiology which affects multiple systems of our body and it is characterised by non caseating granulomatous inflammation. In literature an occasional case report is available on sarcoidosis in Jammu and Kashmir region and there are very few studies in North-India also. So we have made an effort to highlight the incidence of sarcoidosis in this region.
Material and methods: This is a prospective study from January 2020 to December 2022 conducted in the histopathology section of department of Pathology, GMC Jammu a tertiary care centre of Jammu region. A total of 29 biopsy specimens submitted for histopathology were analysed.
Results: Total 29 biopsy specimens were studied over the period of three years. Age range varied between 26-68 years. Majority of patients were in the age group of 4th to 5th decade. In our study we have included lymph node biopsies (13cases), cutaneous biopsies (09cases), transbronchial lung biopsy(06cases) and 01case of liver biopsy. All these cases on histopathology showed presence of non caseating epitheloid cell granulomas with no rimming of lymphocytes.
Conclusion: Diagnosis of sarcoidosis is based on clinical, radiological and histoptahological findings of non caseating granulomas on biopsy specimens.
