Abstract

Background: The proportion of new mothers who have trouble sleeping has been steadily increasing. It has been demonstrated that although some believed the issue to be the result of overdoing it physically exertion during delivery, others believed that their mental and physical fatigue was responsible for the sleep disturbance Insufficient sleep can lead to mental weariness, postpartum depression, and loss of energy. Postpartum mothers' fatigue and sleep during caring for babies can cause issues like disturbed maternal-infant attachment. Sleep disruption issues have increased, with some blaming physical overdoing and others exhaustion. Compared to the third trimester, the first month following birth shows greater levels of sleep disruption.

Material and Methods: The study employed an experimental research methodology and a quantitative research approach on 58 mothers who had given birth early. Two groups of 29 mothers, one for the study and one for the control, were each assigned by simple random sampling. At Krishna Hospital in Karad, the study group was given a fragmented lavender oil necklace for four days of scent inhalation, while the control group received standard medical attention. Analysis of the data was done using both descriptive and inferential statistics, and the self-structured sleep scale was utilised to evaluate the sleep pattern.

Result : The majority Of the mothers, 24 (82.8%) were between the ages of 21 and 30; 12 (41.4%) had earned a post-high school diploma; 21 (72.4%) were unemployed; 20 (69%) were from rural areas; 28 (96.6%) were Hindu; 13 (44.8%) mothers had monthly incomes between 46129 and 61,662 rupees; 15 (51.7%) mothers were from lower middle class families; and 18 (62.1%) mothers were from nuclear families. According to the study, 96.6% of mothers reported mild sleep disturbance and only 3.4% reported severe sleep disturbance after inhaling the scent of a lavender oil necklace for four days.

The experimental group pre –post sleep scale mean ± SD 20.862± 6.039 and t value was 18.601, p-value 0.001, shows that improvement in the quality of sleep among early postpartum mothers after the intervention of fragmented necklace with lavender oil. Aroma inhalation with lavender oil necklace was an effective to improve quality of sleep among postpartum mothers in early postpartum period (p < 0.001)

Conclusion: The study concluded that there was a significant difference was found in the quality of sleep among mothers after administration of   aroma inhalation with lavender oil neckless was an effective to improve quality of sleep among  postpartum mothers  in early postpartum period.
