Abstract

A frequency-reconfigurable microstrip antenna for wireless applications is presented in this paper. The ground plane is attached by means of an infinite form that can be tuned more precisely at the frequency due to its higher effective capacitance and inductance and its minimised insertion loss. Four PIN diodes are used to reconfigure the proposed antenna. The operating frequency bands of the antenna are controlled by means of the four switches. The antenna operates in both S and C bands. By changing the state of some of the switches, the required radiation direction is achieved. The proposed antenna has several advantages, including its small size, frequency and pattern reconfigurability with only four switches. This significantly reduces the complexity of the biasing network. Three modes and nine frequency bands are used in the proposed antenna. The proposed design provides a perfect voltage standing wave ratio in all conditions. For verification purposes, the proposed antennas are built and measured at several switch positions. Good agreement with the simulation is achieved.
