Abstract

Background:Tooth discoloration is a common aesthetic concern that can significantly impact an individual's self-confidence and quality of life. The restoration of discolored teeth is a critical aspect of dental care, as it not only addresses the cosmetic issue but also has implications for the long-term health and function of the tooth. This systematic review aims to synthesize the current evidence on the effect of discolored teeth restoration on the performance and longevity of dental crowns.

Methods:A comprehensive search of electronic databases was conducted to identify studies that examined the restoration of discolored teeth using dental crowns. Inclusion criteria focused on studies that assessed the aesthetic and functional outcomes of different crown materials and techniques in patients with varying degrees of tooth discoloration. Data from a total of 13 studies were extracted and analyzed.

Results:The included studies highlighted the importance of thorough bleaching procedures prior to crown placement to ensure color uniformity and aesthetic success. Hydrogen peroxide-based bleaching agents, particularly at 10% concentration, were found to be effective in reducing discoloration before crown restoration. The extent of discoloration influenced the choice of crown material, with more opaque or densely shaded crowns required for severely discolored teeth. Studies also noted the impact of bleaching on crown adhesion, suggesting the need for specific adhesive protocols following bleaching. Overall, the restoration of discolored teeth with crowns resulted in satisfactory aesthetic outcomes when pre-treatment protocols were carefully followed.

Conclusion:Restoring discolored teeth with dental crowns requires meticulous pre-restorative planning, including effective bleaching to ensure color match and the appropriate selection of crown materials. Adhering to proper adhesive techniques post-bleaching is critical for the longevity and success of the restoration. This review underscores the need for standardized protocols to enhance both aesthetic and functional outcomes in the restoration of discolored teeth.
