Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid hormones are necessary for healthy organ growth and function. These hormones control the basal metabolic rate of all cells, including hepatocytes, and so can modify hepatic functions. So, thyroid dysfunction can thereby impair liver function. Liver disease also can alter thyroid hormone metabolism. In this study we tried to find alteration in liver profile with hypothyroidism.
Aim: To evaluate the serum levels of liver parameters in newly diagnosed cases of hypothyroidism.
Method: This is a hospital based cross-sectional study which was conducted amongst 150 hypothyroid patients. After taking patients’ consent, thyroid function tests & liver parameters were analysed using fully automated analyser (Beckman Coulter DxC AU700). Data was analysed using SPSS version 29 & Pearson correlation test. p – value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: We took 150 hypothyroid patients out of which majority were subclinical (n=112) & few were of overt (n=38). Hypothyroidism found to be more in females as compared to males. The serum levels of bilirubin & liver enzymes were elevated in hypothyroidism patients. Serum levels of liver enzymes were significantly positively correlated with thyroid profile while Albumin levels were significantly negatively correlated.
Conclusion: Hypothyroid patients had significantly altered liver function tests. Understanding how hypothyroidism affects liver parameters can help in advancing medical knowledge & improving guidelines for hypothyroid patients. Studying liver parameters in hypothyroid patients can lead to diagnostic accuracy, preventive care & contributing to outcomes in managing both hypothyroidism & liver health.
