Abstract
Progress in the development and adaptation of biopolymers as a food packaging material have helped the researcher community to recognize the need for exploring the various plant sources and shift their attentiveness towards developing eco-friendly, sustainable, biodegradable, versatile food packaging materials. This review examines the development of edible paper for food packaging focusing on plant-based materials and their functional properties. The review discusses on interaction between packaging and food, factors influencing the interaction, properties of food packaging materials to minimize the negative impact on food. It also elucidates various sources of raw materials and their previous studies in developing biodegradable packaging materials. The study inspires to explore the applications and future challenges in the field of food packaging. Finally, this analysis contributes to sustainable packaging and serves as a literature resource for researchers, policy makers and consumers in advancing food packaging systems.
