Abstract
The present study was carried out to investigate the phytochemical and in vitro antioxidant activity of Blumea oxyodonta root. Qualitative phytochemical analysis of methanol and ethanol extracts of Blumea oxyodonta root revealed the presence of alkaloids, catechins, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, saponins, steroids, tannins, terpenoids, sugars and xanthoproteins. Petroleum ether, benzene, ethyl acetate, methanol and ethanol extracts of Blumea oxyodonta root scavenged DPPH, hydroxyl, superoxide, ABTS radical cation scavenging and reducing activity in a concentration dependent manner. Ethanol extracts of Blumea oxyodonta root exhibited maximum DPPH, superoxide and ABTS radical scavenging activity whereas methanol extract showed enhanced hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. Methanol extract possessed the highest reducing power. Hence, it can be concluded that the B. oxyodonta root could be pharmaceutically exploited for antioxidant properties.
