Abstract

Orodispersible tablets disintegrate immediately in the mouth and can therefore be swallowed without the aid of water. The objective of present study was to formulate Diltiazem HCl orodispersible tablets by direct compression technique using locust bean gum as a natural superdisintegrant. The powder blend prepared for compression was evaluated for precompression parameters such as angle of repose, bulk density, Carr’s index, Hausner’s ratio. Prepared tablets were evaluated for various parameters such as hardness, friability, drug content, weight variation, wetting time, water absorption ratio, in-vitro disintegration time, in-vitro drug release and stability studies. All the evaluated parameters shown good results. Compatibility studies showed that drug and excipients were compatible with each other. The study indicates that formulation batch F6 shows the highest dissolution using locust bean gum at an 8% concentration and showed faster drug release 98.99% over a 25-minute period, while tablet disintegration time was 29 seconds when compared to other formulation batches of Diltiazem HCl.
