Abstract
This study aimed to develop a medicated chewing gum containing diphenhydramine to prevent motion sickness, leveraging a natural gum base for rapid action and convenient use without the need for water. Triticumaestivum (wheat) was selected for the gum base due to its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and availability. The medicated chewing gum was prepared using traditional methods and evaluated across various parameters including physical characteristics, hardness, thickness, diameter, total weight, content uniformity, and in vitro drug release. Results showed hardness ranging from 1.08 to 3.40 kg/cm², thickness from 4.08 to 5.24 mm, diameter from 14.01 to 15.58 mm, total weight from 698.23 to 712.40 mg, and content uniformity between 79.02% and 90.32%. Notably, gum formulations with 30 mg of talc and 500 mg of gum base achieved up to 83% drug release within 20 minutes. The medicated chewing gum proved to be cost-effective, enhancing patient compliance and bioavailability.
