Abstract

Introduction: The skin and the kidney are one of the most essential organs of the human body.

The kidney is essential for maintaining the milieu interior and the skin for maintaining\homeostasis. Therefore, both the organs share many diseases and share mutually each other’s pathology which is of use for the physician. Cutaneous examination of these patients with chronic kidney disease has shown that the most of these patients have at least one cutaneous manifestation. Skin related issue can impair the quality of life significantly, in order to improve the quality-of-life early diagnosis and treatment is important.

Materials and methods: A case control study was done at outpatient department   of dermatology, medicine, and dialysis ward, at Karpaga Vinayaga Medical College, Chengalpattu district, after obtaining approval from Institutional ethics Committee (IEC). Cases were divided into 3 Groups, *Group1= patients on Hemodialysis. *Group2= patients on medical management. *Group3= Control patients without renal impairment, Of 100 cases each with controls. Pre structured questionnaire was filled, after obtaining informed and written consent from subjects included in the study.

Results: Most common age group encountered in both the HD group and medical management

group was 26-50 years compared to controls which belonged to >50 years. In the current study serum creatinine values ranged from 4-19 mg\dl among HD group and blood urea values ranged from 3-9 mg\dl among MD group. Majority of patients belongs to the creatinine value of 11-15mg/dl (63%). The predominant skin manifestation is xerosis (43%).

Conclusion: Most of the clinical manifestations were in par with the blood urea and creatinine values. Early diagnosis and treatment of these cutaneous manifestations help to reduce the psychological morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic renal failure, hence helping to improve the quality of life.
